What to Wear to Your Maternity Session

Choosing an outfit for your maternity photo session can be difficult. Your body has changed quite a bit over the last few months, and finding an outfit that is both comfortable and flattering can seem like an impossible task. As a motherhood and maternity photographer, it’s my job to make you look and feel your best during your photo session, so I’m here to help in any way that I can. Here are a few tips on how to choose an outfit for your maternity session:

Silhouette

First things first. For maternity photos, long dresses tend to photograph really well and are flattering on most body types. However, when choosing a dress, try to avoid options that have absolutely no silhouette or are too baggy. A dress that compliments mama’s waist and flows down the body is an excellent choice. That type of silhouette always photographs really well on expectant mothers. If you want to show off the bump even more, and if you’re comfortable, fitted or tighter dresses are also an option.

Color palate

Choosing an appropriate color palate is another crucial aspect to consider when selecting your maternity session outfit. I’ve found that neutral colors tend to look the best in photos, so stay away from dark colors and bold or busy prints. Choosing an outfit with a print is perfectly fine, but I recommend the print be minimal and subtle.

If your partner or children are joining you for your maternity photos, make sure their outfits complement yours but don’t match exactly (and always choose your outfit first). For example, if your dress is cream colored with a subtle green floral pattern, your child or spouse can wear a solid green shirt in a similar shade with jeans or neutral-colored pants. That way, your outfits are coordinated, but not too matchy matchy.

Footwear

When it comes to footwear, try to prioritize comfort over style. Be mindful of where your session is taking place. If you’re taking photos outside, heels that sink into the ground are probably not a good idea. Considering long dresses are usually the outfit of choice for pregnancy photos, and your feet often aren’t the focus in the photo, comfortable and neutral shoes are best.

Undergarments

Be sure to try on your maternity session outfit (or outfits) with your underwear to ensure that they are comfortable and no lines are visible. In my experience, nude, no-show, and full coverage underwear tend to work the best.

Bare belly photos

If you want to show off your bare belly during your maternity session, choose an outfit that will easily allow you to expose your bump. Button up shirts and robe style dresses are always great options for easy access to the bump. Bare belly photos are tastefully done and as always, your comfort is my number one priority.
